Gah.

I'm just as frustrated as you are, Pinkie.

Just can't think of a good pose for this thing.

Continuing the good tradition of drawing funny ponies when I'm becoming frustrated with some part of design:

Spoiler:
Not quite happy with the rear legs and rear torso in general. The face can use a few tweaks as well.

That looks pretty neat, but I agree with you, the other eyes were better. I also did like the original pose, but since you want to show some action in the picture, this one is much better.

Also, I don't quite see what's wrong with the rear legs. She's supposed to have really freaking strong legs, so that fits rather well.

Huh? What possible reason for making it shaped like the driver can there be that does NOT require it to have the same hat?

Well, the hat is a piece of apparel, so keeping it is a little too strange. In addition, it'd mean AJ keeps the hat when she morphs into Ranger form. This is on top of the obvious considerations of practicality. Pinkie overrides considerations of practicality by being her usual self, but AJ's mech is a heavy-duty fighter, and anything that isn't armor or part of the transformation probably shouldn't be on it.

Well, you could make it a needlessly flashy part of the helmet. Let's face it, "needlessly flashy" is pretty much the modus operandi for any Super Sentai type series since humanoid (or equin...oid?) mechs are always extremely impractical.

There's an artistry event over at EqD, which I'm not, strictly speaking, participating in, but it did remind me that I need to brush up on drawing actual living things rather than just machines. As such, have a new drawing:

(1000 wide, so might get clipped)
Spoiler:

Colored:
Spoiler:

The Magenta Ranger facing off against Nightmare Moon alone, while the others are busy crushing the Shadowbolts and their machines. Of course, it doesn't go so well.

The idea for this part was that Twilight still didn't experience the Spark at this point, and as such has no Titan (giant robot) form, and gets her plot handed to her in one-on-one combat against Nightmare Moon. The Rangers arrive to help her just in time, beat back NMM, who then goes Godzilla on them. Seeing her friends rally to her, Twilight experiences the Spark and activates her own Titan form, subsequently forming the ultimate Harmonic Titan Megazord and pulverizing Nightmare Moon. Beaten, NMM surrenders her power and releases Celestia, turning back into princess Luna. Etc, etc. It'd really make a fun comic or story if I had any talent for drawing comics or writing.

Comic drawing hollows basically the same rules as normal composition, which you seem to have a good handle on, just applied with an extra level of recursion, and there are plenty of good writers around here.

Re: Sean Mirrsen's generic pony art thread.

Post  Sean Mirrsen on Sun Jan 15, 2012 11:05 pm

I've been somewhat kept from drawing much of anything, so there's fairly little progress to report anywhere.

Just a few random sketches:
Second attempt at a USS Canterprise - still not good:

A pony-oid alien race some GM guy over at GitP made up:
Same, with armor sketch:

Plus, starting to properly detail the Harmonic Justice. I got almost everything, except the hind legs, and for now I'm trying to find a good pose.
Any suggestions? The current options so far are her signature "standing with forelegs crossed" one, a plain "standing firm" one, and perhaps some sort of "standing with one or two legs raised/doing something" pose. I can't choose which one will look better at this angle.

That text won't even be in the complete pic, but sure, why the hell not.

Almost got the design right, but still struggling with the pose a little.
Spoiler:
The left foreleg and both hind legs, and the tail, are all still in sketch phase.

Something new in the making, a follow-up of sorts to the previous pic with the Magenta Ranger.

Spoiler:
It's missing four more Rangers (five, even, since I decided Rarity won't be doing the flying kick thing), some fancy apparel for Nightmare Moon, and a whole lot of thought carefully stashed in strategic places throughout. As a scene where a lot of things are going to be happening at once, this one will need a lot of planning to set up.

Pulled Rarity out of that last scene for the moment, and added RD and AJ:

I can't see any imperfections in AJ, except maybe the face doesn't seem to be that of a pony, but the mask doesn't look like there couldn't be a pony head in there, so it's fine. You could probably have her tucking in her legs a bit more so that her drop-kick will have less drag, but it doesn't matter too much.

It's not a dropkick, it's a sideways bicycle kick.

Spoiler:

Altered AJ to be a little more dynamic, added the Pink One and a sort of a placeholder for Fluttershy. With the space left on the pic, I have nowhere to put Rarity... except...

Except, I could try and use this, on a downward vector from top right. How she got there is anyone's guess. Maybe have Fluttershy give her a boost?

Hey, it actually doesn't look half bad.

Spoiler:
I sketch these zoomed out, so sorry for horrible sketchiness in full view.
Now just need a better pose for Fluttershy, maybe some scenery, and a good look or two with a critical eye to spot oddities before going into detail.

I haven't done him yet, but he's definitely on the to-do list, as he's a major villain - or, I should say, THE major villain, unless I go all Phantasy Star and have Dark Force or equivalent be behind everything (i.e. from NMM through all minor villains in the show to Discord, which, the latter disregarded, is sort of the current plan).

Oh, and something completely out of left field:

Spoiler:

Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie racing in flame-painted bulldozers. Yes.
Based off a request (to another artist) on GitP forums. I've no idea why it possessed me so, but I couldn't help but draw it. (And four minutes before I finished, GitP went into its daily backup phase. *le sigh*)
