Quick retouch:

Spoilered for Painter default size being 1900 wide (edit: wait, I can resize that):

Best of all, I can sketch in Painter and export to PSD with little to no functionality loss.

Oh, and of course I spent no money on this thing. Who do you take me for, a non-Russian?

Technically, that's no longer FiN. That's "FiD", as I acronym it, although "FId" or "FI" would be more accurate.

More touch-ups and detail:

The only coloring tool I can at least somewhat nicely use is a colored pencil. It feels like I'm back in kindergarten for some reason. I think there's still a jug full of colored pencils from those times sitting in a shelf somewhere.

Nothing spectacularly new, just once again proving that there's no replacing Photoshop for coloring. (Or clean linework, for that matter)

'Tis odd, I wanted to overhaul the Diverjack image today... ended up gravitating to this again. I guess my subconscious really wants to get that AU out of my imagination.

I've suddenly reminded myself that I have a much more important piece to complete. Putting it here rather that in Goblin's Friend section, for reasons outlined previously.

Some recoloring (tail colors were in wrong order), and experimenting with shadows to bring out some depth in foreground characters. Plus details, of course.

*nods* Interestingly, not one I spent most time on. That's the point of improving, I suppose.

More details and subtle shading work. One could almost say, shady work.

REGARDLESS!
Gotta agree with Armok, this looks amazing! Especially the feathers and hair are really good.

More details, more shady work:

Also, I believe I officially can't leave "well enough" alone, but this part of the design has been bugging me for some time.

Better or worse? I've saved both versions, so I can continue working on either if I manage to decide which to work on.

I honestly don't see that big a difference. Except...
Hmm, the metal seems a bit... shinier in the second picture, but that's probably not the only difference. Would you enlighten us?

No comment? Oh well.

I've decided to remember that RD's mane actually connects to her neck, plus a few other things. And very shady work again, as usual.

Almost nearing completion. There are now a few places in the image looking at which doesn't cause me to want to redraw them entirely.

This... this is just amazing. I know I say this for pretty much everything you draw, but this one is really special, and I can't wait for you to get to a state that you'll consider to be 'finished'. Also, it is going to be doing a turn in my wallpaper rotation right now.

Wallpaper? Really?

Seriously though, it's far from being wallpaper material, not least because it's eight by six hundred pixels, IIRC. I'm not sure I can keep up with that kind of detail at proper wallpaper resolutions (say, 1600x1024). That'll be left for a much, much later experiment.

edit: so as not to have a plain text update in an art thread, have the latest snapshot:

Lots and lots of shady work on Scoot's tail, RD's neck and mane, and some surrounding scenery.

No, there're still a few bits that aren't even started on. The scenery out the window and the guards are completely undetailed, even mostly unshaded. Once I've done those, I think I'll stop working on it. Not quite done, but it'll be "good enough" then.

In the meantime, I did start on something different. Remember me talking about a "much, much later experiment"? A few hours much, much later, it has begun.

Note, the image is extremely huginormous, and very, very much a sketch. Just trying to "see the scene" again. It'll be best if you look at it zoomed out.
Spoiler:

This no longer has anything to do with the fic. I'm just taking the character and, well, "running with it".
I think RD's neck is too long, among other things.

Re: Sean Mirrsen's generic pony art thread.

Post  Sean Mirrsen on Tue Dec 20, 2011 1:28 pm

Mmkay, I decided I don't like the composition in that one after all. I'll redraw it with some different pose for RD, and maybe a different angle.

In the meantime, have some doodlings on the matter of "what would happen if the Elements of Harmony didn't create the Orbital Friendship Cannon when used". Specifically, this is the "Captain Planet" variant. Or, since I was drawing without any reference and just went with whatever wound up materializing in my malign mind, he/she ended up as more of a "Captain Platypus".

Thoughts?

I keep posting these from work, and I keep forgetting there's nobody here to comment at those times. We gotta get ourselves a few more Russians in here.

Anyway, this is the absolute best I can do with the design, moving on.
