This was fun to do.

A little too messy again, but at least more fidelity this time. Keeper?

Fixed the horrible aliasing on the text (same image), so all that's left is the curly tail-o-doom. I wonder if the pic will see any use once it's done. I've mostly drawn it because the GitP ponythread has seen a massive influx of all those old "HATE DETECTED" images lately, for no sane reason (i.e. par for the course in the ponythread), and I just so happened to be thinking of the Pony Rangers and their megamech at the time.

No progress on the tail (tablet too far, head too sleepy), so just a different caption I thought up from looking at the current one.

TBH I liked the old caption better, since the "nuke from orbit" reference was already obvious and it was twisted in a way that made sense and was badass.

Your changing avatars keep throwing me off guard, Kaijyuu.

Well then, this is how it's going to look like:

Added the blasted tail, plus took the opportunity to do some shady work. All in all, pretty nice. I should probably get that other piece done too, while I'm still reasonably focused.

Note: the above picture references the mech called Zeorymer of the Heavens.

I keep drawing odd things here and there, but nothing really worth sharing with anyone. Got 30 minutes of usable time today, made this.

Spoiler:
Link Form

Not too sure with proportions here, but the scene as a whole does seem better than my earlier experiments with scene setup. If only I would actually return to finish it later...

(on the same note, I need to find time to finish and/or revise these two:)
Spoiler:

Link Form 1
Link Form 2

First picture is Taira... whatshername, forgot to check my notes on that. One of the key characters in a custom universe of mine, psion prodigy and reluctant commander of a regiment of power armor shock troopers. She's on the right. On the left, the beginnings of the design of the aforementioned shock troopers.
Second one is Bleakbane, the magical space lich RP representation of one of the GitP ponythread forumites, reimagined as a pony princess. The ponythread is crazy sometimes.

Improving further. Charcoal shading looks interesting, but is hard to make look right.

Also found a little program called MyPaint and drew an RD in it. Works surprisingly well (even if RD isn't terribly on model... and those eyes are just terrible)

I dare say this RD is loads and loads better. Razz

This is, in general, the style of pony I am now aiming to gravitate towards, because it's reasonably on-model and reasonably real-looking.

Also, MyPaint is the best thing ever until you need to do something nontrivial. Like, say, selecting and copypasting a tree so you don't have to draw the whole forest by hand.

New thing for today. I've mentioned at some point (and to some people) that I've got only one real OC, Southern Sky. So, this is her. I never really got to look at her design and color with a critical eye before, so the result slightly fills me with dismay.
Spoiler:
Looks a little too much like a certain well-known pegasus explorer, doesn't she? Hair's not grayscale and in much less of a wild mess (more of a Hime Cut), but otherwise...*le sigh* This is a coincidence, I swear! :smalleek:
As for her story... I'm still figuring out how much of it I can actually tell, and irregardless it's bound to be on the low end of the originality scale (regardless of whether it's true or not), considering the Multiworlds, and myself, by extension, are involved. Well, time will tell even if I won't.

Bah, it's a different enough color combination, mane cut and cutie mark that any similarity to Daring Do is trivial. Seriously, there are only so many good colors for coats/manes that some are bound to be repeated, and at least this OC's not a typical eye-bleed color combo. I am seriously sick of seeing bright, clashing color combos.

Anybody who claims to mistake your OC for Daring Do probably has an OC with red coat, black and white mane, and bat wings. /minirant over

Apologies (kinda) extended to anyone here with an OC like that. Just a pet peeve.

I wasn't going to say anything about her, because she truly isn't that bad. Regular eyes, no fangs, and not a thrice-damned random-alicorn-of-the-day.

However, lighten the coat and/or mane and you'd have a much more show-friendly color scheme. Or, for that matter, darken either/both. If you want at least one color to pop, make it the mane.

This one is Slag's OC, yes?

You can also completely ignore my aesthetic sensibilities and do what pleases OC creator and/or artist, which is far more important in the long run.

That one is fairly normal, apart from the name.

Spoiler:
But yes, the influx of "unique" OCs is in the same vein as poorly written self-insert suefics: tons of them are around, none are very good, and they speak volumes about the mind of the creator. I do make up absurdly overpowered self-inserts and put them into verses I like, but the difference is that I do that in my damned daydreams instead of writing it down and expecting other people to enjoy it. Actually, I've built up a sort of multiverse centered around a group of true immortals who have been alive for so long that even with their small rate of power gain has left them with so much power that they consider collapsing an entire universe to be an acceptable method for dealing with sufficiently powerful foes. They killed the being that empowered them when it was corrupted, but are incapable of death and cannot create more of themselves, and are slowly declining, one by one choosing to put themselves into permanent, dreamless comas. So long (millions of years), depressing lives mixed with TTGLesque willpower, multiverse, and extreme dedication to restraint and appropriate levels of response. Of course, I would never dream of writing this out, because who the hell cares?

IMO anything can be done well. Self inserts just tend to have a perspective problem on the part of the author; they obviously care about themselves, but they don't realize the reader doesn't, so they don't make the character very interesting on the actual paper.

Sues are a slightly different beast with the same problem: assumption the audience cares rather than writing a story that makes the audience care. Having nothing but positive/sympathetic traits doesn't do that.

One good self insert fic (so I've heard; I haven't read it) would be Through the Eyes of Another Pony. Even ships himself with Luna. Lots of people like it, so the concept isn't inherently bad, but rather has lots of easy pitfalls to fall into.

Re: Sean Mirrsen's generic pony art thread.

Post  Sean Mirrsen on Sun May 27, 2012 8:39 am

Yeah, that's the chiefest problem with stories that have Author Avatars. That's pretty much why I hesitate to try telling the story of the Greatest of the Wars, and even small things like the fate of this OC of mine, because Controller Sean 'Jaguar' Mirrsen, my avatar (or I his, it's rather blurry) features there prominently, and I am far from sure I can avoid all those pitfalls in the telling of it.

But enough of storytelling, we're here for a different kind of art.

New thing for today, you-know-who and you-know-who sharing a table, some smoothies, and the stories of their lives. Tiny version in preparation of upscale and detailing.

(I do believe I've botched proportions on Cherry Pop there, but MyPaint doesn't allow editing, so I'll do a quick Photoshopping before detailing)

I'm seeking some responses on figures, poses, and expressions, btw. Both for this and the previous works. If you have an opinion, please do share it.

Well, yes. But fanfiction tends to be one of the most obvious areas for application of Sturgeon's Revelation; when I buy a novel, I assume that it is at least marginally readable; I don't do the same when I start reading a fanfic. Besides, it could hardly be considered a pitfall when so many would-be authors dive in facefirst. Razz

Of course, equally depressing are the crossover fics that exist solely for a character from one verse to overpower/be hit on by the characters of the second. Go to the Negima crossover section on ff.n and read the summary for pretty much any of the x-overs with Naruto for a prime example. Don't worry about spotting them either; they make up an obscene proportion of the MSN crossovers. Come to think of it, I think I've ranted about this exact thing before.

Update:
Suddenly, Huge!:
Link
I'm not actually upscaling, I suddenly find it easier to just redraw the whole thing using the small sketch as a guide. That said, MyPaint seriously needs at least SOME editing tools. For instance, I want to nudge Cherry Pop closer to the table, and for that I suddenly need to save the whole thing as a transparent PNG, import it into Photoshop, edit, save as a transparent PNG there, load back, losing layers in the process. (though maybe I could just copypaste, that function still exists for some reason... but what with there being no way to move layers around, I wonder how well that works)

I'm sure different parts of me would feel something about parts of her in general, were I not as mentally restrained and shielded as I am.

I'm still not sure how an earth pony or pegasus is supposed to "operate" a banana, btw.
